Codename: 'Worrier'
In the 1980's Roy fronted the three piece NWOBHM (New Wave of British Heavy Metal) band Warrior, fondly remembered by hearing aid specialists everywhere. A three track ten inch single was produced in 1980 that sold at gigs for £1.50! Never completing another studio project an album of demos was released in the 2000's in limited quantities in order to document the bands catalogue at that time. Joining Roy on the single were bassist Martin Jones and drummer Steve Halford.
Warrior was Roy’s first serious band and was highly popular in what became known as the era of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWoBHM) in the mid to late seventies.
A Greek independent record label, Obscure NWoBHM Releases has recently released an album of Warrior material gleaned from its meagre recorded output and demos produced at the time. Although ‘of its age’ it is an interesting insight into Roy’s early talent for song writing and charts an interesting period of his development.
The band helped set up a record label for the project 'Rambert Records' under the guidance of Jeff Merrifield. Rambert went on to release other Essex bands' singles in the 1980's and 90's. (bless 'im; it was Jeff that got Roy playing in public in the first place).
